Travel Guitar Experiment
Completed April 2016
Repairs completed June 25, 2016

Made from scrap and reclaimed wood from various source and projects. Goals:

  • Full 25" scale
  • Minimize the size, so...
  • The tuners are inside the body (eliminating the headstock)
  • Floating bridge to allow the tuners to be inside the box
  • Access to tuners without opening the box
  • Include a Pickup

It uses an aluminum cylinder to allow a large radius for the strings to smoothly enter the box to attach to the tuners.

Repairs (completed June 25, 2016)

The original design had a problem. The string tension was causing the aluminum cylinder (repurposed from a solar landscape light) to move. A wooden dowel (from a broom handle) was fit inside the cylinder and two 4d finishing nails acted as an axel to hold it all in place. The force on that skinny axel was causing the cylinder to move.

I added an additional brace to try to keep the cylinder in place but it also failed.

Disassembly

In the photos below (where I an disassembling the parts), you can see the added brace and the original construction.

The Fix

Instead of 4d finishing nails, I used a 1/2" dowel for the axel. I reworked the tuner holders to do double duty and hold the cylinder assembly in place.
