Methods - Making a Stacked Heel

This page shows how I make a neck using a stacked heel.

I add a few veneers of contrasting wood as a decorative accent.

Parts for the Stacked Heel

The photo on the right shows the parts for the stacked heel (in front of the neck blank). The pieces behind the neck blank are the tail block and neck block.

The heel will be built up from the neck shaft with a three veneers (maple-rosewood-maple) and, in this case, the leftover Sipo Mahogany from making the neck shaft.

Heel Glue-up

Dry fit all the parts before glue-up.

I generally glue each section separately so that I don't have multiple pieces slding around when clamping.

Also to keep the parts aligned, I drill a small hole through the pieces to be glued (in an area that will be carved away in the final neck shaping) and insert toothpicks to stop the parts from sliding around during the gluing.

The picture shows the last section being glued.

The Stacked Heel

Here's the heel glued-up.

At this point, the accent veneers don't look like much.

In the pictures below, you can see the accents take shape as the neck is carved.
